I‘d planned to make this entry brief. Nothing more than good wishes for all for the coming new year. However, I couldn’t let the day go by without mentioning one of the best stories in quite a while, this one from the dailymail.co.uk/news via Drudge this morning, as follows:

  

“They went in search evidence of the world’s melting ice caps, but instead a team of climate scientists have been forced to abandon their mission … because the Antarctic ice is thicker than usual at this time of year.

 

The scientists have been stuck aboard the stricken MV Akademik Schokalskiy since Christmas Day, with repeated sea rescue attempts being abandoned as icebreaking ships failed to reach them.

 

Now that effort has been ditched, with experts admitting the ice is just too thick. Instead the crew have built an icy helipad, with plans afoot to rescue the 74-strong team by helicopter.”

 

Since the operation itself is called the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, setting off from New Zealand on November 28, I looked up the nation’s health care policy, out of concern regarding the possible need for treating frostbite when the crew returns and here’s what I found:

 

According to Wikipedia: “The funding model for health care in Australia has seen political polarization, with governments being crucial in shaping national health care policy. Administrative duplication and a lack of coordination at the national level have led to Australia's health policy being described as slow, reactive and inefficient.”

 

So, I guess that since governmentally controlled health care doesn’t seem to work well down under at all, the boatload of people are going to have thaw out by themselves.
