BloggeRhythms

Trying to always read carefully, to be certain of grasping what’s been written, I frequently wonder if proof-readers, editors and others responsible for checking text ever really read anything closely they publish at all.

This morning, digital politics editor for Fox News, Chris Stirewalt’s column included the following: “The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is hitting hard at Republicans in the battle over unemployment benefits. In a release the DSCC slams the GOP saying, “Because of Republican Senate candidates and the reckless economic agenda they have embraced, long-term jobless insurance has expired for more than 1 million Americans who have been looking for work for at least 26 weeks, denying families the crucial relief they need while costing the economy an estimated 240,000 jobs.”

Now, after re-reading the preceding several times I shook my head in confusion, wondering how could “denying families the crucial relief they need" cost the economy an estimated 240,000 jobs, when by definition, the million jobless one’s haven’t been working at all.

Then there was this one from Politico’s Patrick Gavin, who writes that “Democratic Leadership Council founder Al From is out with a new book, “The New Democrats and the Return to Power,” that both examines the success of the ideology most prominently practiced by former President Bill Clinton in the 1990s and lays out From’s vision of where Democrats need to go next.”

In his book, Mr. From writes about Hillary and opines that, “She needs to take the core principles that under girded Bill Clinton’s principles, the New Democratic principles of opportunity, community and responsibility, but understand that there are new challenges and come up with a new agenda,” From said. “If she lays out a vision for the future of the country with specific ideas, I think she’s going to be unstoppable. … I think that when people look back on eight years of peace and prosperity, some of the personal things that may have gotten in the way at the end of his administration, people forget that. But I think people will look back at the 1990s as a pretty good time in this country.”

And here again, reading carefully illustrates that people don’t always think through what they write while trying to make a point, because the facts frequently prove something else entirely.

In this case, what Willy did was to leave Alan Greenspan, Republican economic wizard, in charge of the Fed. And it was Mr. Greenspan’s management of the money supply that not only kept the nation financially humming for the Clinton years, it helped downplay all the other mistakes, including infidelity, because nobody wanted to rock the economic boat.

So, if Mr. From truly believes it’s best for the nation to return to the 1990’s, what’s paramount to success again is insuring that Republicans are in charge of anything having to do with the economy.  And if Hillary’s elected president, she should be allowed to have an affair with any guy in the White House because she’ll have plenty of time on her hands just like Bill did back then when Republicans really ran the show for him.

That’s it for today folks.

Adios
